Oh yes...this is what it feels like.

I had almost forgotten how stifling the city is in July, mostly because this year I have an air conditioner in my apartment and because I don't have to make my way through the hot-piss soaked Times Square on a regular basis like I used to. Until, that is, last night. Joe and I arrived home from dinner to find our entire block was dark. Fabulous. He'd been talking about the possiblity of blackouts like literally all day so with our luck I would not have been suprised if he'd jinxed us. After finding our way to the apartment past the huge ConEdison trucks and electrical wiring littering the pavement, we found out that due to a manhole explosion, transformers in the neighborhood had been blown leaving like 4 blocks of our hood in the dark and the terrible heat. Apparently it had been that way since 5 p.m. After a cold shower, a glass of wine, and a failed attempt to play both Uno and Scrabble, we decided we couldn't handle the heat/humidity anymore and headed outside armed with our lawnchair/tailgating chairs and a very handy-dandy battery-powered amp (which Joe plugged his iPod up to). About 11:30 I was too exhausted to stay awake and dreaded the lack of nice breeze from oven that was our apartment. The electricity didn't come back on until 6:30 a.m. this morning and needless to say, it was a nasty, sweat-drenched night of fitful sleeping (sort of). Our bed will never be the same. :(
